Down lights and switches
After a month of overseas travel I came back to Sydney this week and noticed with disappointment that my apartment hadn't magically renovated itself in my absence and that there was a massive amount of work to be done. The kitchen is under construction and will be arriving in the next two weeks or so. Winter seems like a great time to renovate and do rejuvenating things around the place. It's pouring rain here in Sydney at the moment and that coupled with the strong winds and cold weather makes it an ideal time to be inside working on the place. There are few outside distractions and the holes in the wall call to be fixed when the cold wind sweeps through the place. Today Dad and I headed over to Bunnings and the Wattyl trade shop to pick up some more tools and supplies. At Bunnings we bought a Stabila spirit level, insulated flat and philips head screwdrivers, safety goggles, buckets, window cleaning gear, a 270mm paint roller kit, scraper and a tape measure to replace the one that had gone missing from the apartment. At the wattyl paint trade store we bought ceiling paint for the bedrooms and lounge room and kitchen. Additional ceiling paint for the bathroom and laundry that was more high gloss as well as an anti fungal additive for said paints. We also bought a paint roller extender, a 5kg bag of rags, plaster filler, a paint brush for the cornices and 3M blue masking tape for the windows. The previous night I'd been over at Dean's place and borrowed from him a laser device which was used to accurately position the center point for the down lights. This device shines a laser both up to the ceiling and down to the floor so it's possible to measure out the down light position on the floor and then to project the position of each down light up to the ceiling. This would save us heaps of time on the down light layouts. The tool in question is a Hilti PMP34 Point Laser On the way to the apartment we also stopped at TLE electrical wholesalers in Artarmon to get the proper fitting for the TV cable outlet. The one that I had was the wrong type and we needed to swap it for an F-type connection. Arriving at the apartment around 10 we started by drilling the holes for the screws for all of the light switches and powerpoints. Some of the switches and powerpoints needed the old paint scraped away from around the switch and others required some plaster filler to fill in some rough spots. The dimmer control and one of the power points in the main room required some chiseling to allow the new switch to fit properly into the wall. This part took a bit over an hour to get all of the switches and power points ready for screwing into the wall. After doing this I walked down to the cafe at the station and bought us some crepes and coffees while Dad filled in the holes in the wall above the main window that were caused by the blinds that used to hang there. This repair can now be sanded back ready for painting. After we'd eaten dad went into the roof and gave me the measurements for the joists in the roof space. We needed to know these so that we didn't put the down lights directly into a joist. We got the measurements for the lounge room, kitchen and corridor which would all have down lights. After that we came up with the plans for where the down lights would be laid out in the lounge room. The lights in the lounge room are 8 in total arranged in 3 rows. The first 2 rows are 3 lights spaced evenly about 1.6 meters apart, and 1000mm from each wall. The 3rd row consists of 2 lights positioned in line with the first two lights from the other rows. This gives an even coverage over the entire lounge room. In the corridor we placed 4 lights. Three heading down towards the end of the corridor, and the last one around the corner between the doors to the bathroom and the second bedroom. We removed the smoke detector and the existing light in the corridor which was great because it looked like it was from 1965. That light we replaced with a down light hole that will shine into the cupboard in the hallway. In the kitchen we positioned one light directly over the sink and one directly over the entrance from the balcony door. We then put another light over the entrance doorway from the lounge room and a 4th light will replace the existing fluro tube in the kitchen. The points for the downlights were marked out using the Hilti laser tool which worked like a treat! We quickly had the lights marked on the cieling and then it was time to start drilling the holes. Dean had left us a hole cutter which we used in conjunction with a vacuum cleaner to make the holes for the lights. We did a quick test with one light to make sure that it fit and it went in no problems. We had no problems in the lounge room since we'd made sure that we weren't going to hit any of the joists in the ceiling. After we'd drilled the holes in the kitchen we moved into the hallway where disaster struck when the hole near the bathroom was located right under a joist that was running in the opposite direction to all the others. The drill bit in the hole saw snapped. It was getting late at that point and we debated leaving it but I really wanted to get all the drilling done so we made a quick run over to Bunnings to get another drill bit. After we returned we quickly drilled out the remaining holes and chipped away at the joist where the previous drill bit had snapped. We were able to create enough space there for the light to fit in. It was a long day finishing around 5pm. Pictures coming soon.
